#3 Heels Win Sixth Match In A Row, Outlasting Wolfpack, 3-0
October 11, 2000 | Women's Soccer
With the win the Tar Heels improve to 12-1 overall on the season and 3-1 in the Atlantic Coast Conference. The Wolfpack saw its four-match winning streak snapped as it fell to 8-5-1 overall and 1-2 in the ACC. Carolina has now won six matches in a row since losing 2-1 at Clemson on September 13.
Carolina's starting lineup featured a pair of new faces as Schwoy made her first start since December 6, 1998 against Florida in the NCAA championship game. Schwoy returned to her familiar spot as Carolina's attacking center midfielder and played 30 minutes of the game--15 in each half before being subbed out. In addition, freshman midfielder Maggie Tomecka made her first career start for the Tar Heels, taking over at the playmaking center midfielder position for Leslie Gaston. Anne Remy moved into the starting role at center forward while Meredith Florance came off the bench and provided the Tar Heels with an offensive spark in the 15th minute. Remy had been starting at the attacking center middie spot in Schwoy's absence.
It was dynamic freshman striker Ramsey who got the Tar Heels on the board at the 9:07 mark as she scored on a direct free kick after a Wolfpack foul. Ramsey's kick sailed just over the outstretched arm of Wolfpack goalkeeper Gretchen Lear, who made five saves on the evening while allowing the three Tar Heel goals.
UNC increased the lead to 2-0 at 37:42 when Florance tallied on a neatly placed shot into the top of the net. Florance took a pass from Kalli Kamholz at the top of the box and finished the scoring sequence with aplomb. It was Florance's 16th goal of the season. She currently is tied for the lead nationally in points per game and she ranks third in the nation in goals scored per game.
The Tar Heels finished off the scoring at the 70:44 mark when Schwoy scored her first goal since November 8, 1998 when she tallied in Carolina's 4-0 win over Clemson in the 1998 ACC Tournament championship game. Schwoy headed in a pass from senior defender Kalli Kamholz to make the final score 3-0.
Carolina outshot the Wolfpack 15-4 and had four corner kicks on the night to none for State. UNC junior Kristin DePlatchett went the whole way in the goal for the Tar Heels, making four saves.
The Tar Heels will return to action again next Tuesday, October 17 when they play at 19th-ranked Florida State in Tallahassee, Fla.
