Chapel Hill, N.C. -- The University of North Carolina baseball team defeated the Winthrop Eagles 14-3 Wednesday night at Boshamer Stadium behind the solid pitching of junior lefty Eric Henderson. Henderson (6-4) went six innings, allowing only three hits and no earned runs while striking out seven. Eagles starter Keith Pawlish (3-6) picked up the loss for Winthrop. With the victory, the Tar Heels go to 41-11 on the season, while Winthrop falls to 25-25.
Carolina got the scoring started with two runs in the second inning. Matt McCay and Eric Henderson started the inning with singles, and an error by Winthrop's second baseman allowed McCay to score Carolina's first run. A Ryan Earey sacrifice fly scored Henderson to give the Tar Heels a 2-0 lead after two.
Carolina's offense kept rolling in the third, hitting up Pawlish for five earned runs. The inning was highlighted by a bizarre play in which Carolina recorded a triple steal. Adam Greenberg hit his eighth homer of the season just inside the right field foul pole to begin the inning. Winthrop Head Coach Joe Hudak argued the call and was eventually ejected from the game by home plate umpire Ron Sebastian. A Dan Moylan RBI single scored Clay Hooper before McCay, Henderson and Russ Adams all reached base. With Earey at the plate, the Winthrop defense thought a walk occurred which the umpire corrected to a full count. All three Tar Heel base runners advanced on the play, however, and McCay was credited with a steal of home. Moylan and Henderson also scored in the inning to give Carolina a 5-0 lead after three.
The Tar Heels added a run in the fifth after a Chris Maples sacrifice fly scored Tyrell Godwin and a run in the sixth when Greenberg scored on a wild pitch.
Winthrop scored three runs in the top of the seventh before Carolina answered with freshman right-hander Scott Autrey who pitched 1.2 innings and struck out four of the five batters he faced.
Carolina added three in the bottom of the seventh on a three-run homer by Chad Prosser that put the Tar Heels ahead 12-3. Carolina closed out the scoring with two more runs in the ninth to earn the 14-3 victory.
Hooper and Adams lead the Tar Heels at the plate, each going three for four. Greenberg finished two for four, and Prosser had three RBI on the night.
Carolina returns to action Thursday night when they travel to Lynchburg, Va. to face the Liberty Flames at 7:00 p.m. TheTar Heels wrap up Atlantic Coast Conference regular-season play on May 13 & 14 when they host the Florida State Seminoles at Boshamer Stadium.
