As a Sophomore (2001)
Compiled a 3-3 record • Led UNC with 12 starts and 68.0 innings and tied for the team lead with 42 strikeouts • Showed tremendous improvement in the last month of the season • Had a 19-inning scoreless streak over three games, including a complete-game shutout at Clemson, the first time UNC had held the Tigers scoreless at Clemson in the history of the series • Was named ACC Co-Pitcher of the Week on April 30 after his performance versus Clemson • Allowed two runs on six hits over 6.0 innings in the season-opening win over James Madison for his first win of 2001 • Set new career highs of seven innings pitched and six strikeouts in the ACC loss to Wake Forest on March 18 • Dropped to 1-3 with a loss to Virginia on April 15; gave up four runs on seven hits in 5.1 innings against the Cavs • Had a strong outing but got a no decision in the April 20 win over Duke; entered the game with two outs and the bases loaded in the top of the first for just his second relief appearance of the year; after giving up four hits and one run, he settled down and retired 13 straight batters before being taken out in the middle of the seventh inning • Had a career-game his next outing, a 4-0 shutout win at Clemson on April 29, by pitching a complete-game shutout against the Tigers; allowed just four hits, walked one and tied a career-high with six strikeouts in leading UNC to the win • Continued to excel with a win against Georgia Tech to close the season on May 13; held the Yellow Jackets scoreless into the sixth inning of the May 13 victory, marking a 19-inning scoreless streak dating back to that April 20 game versus the Blue Devils. Summer 2001: Pitched for the Orleans Cardinals of the Cape Cod League • Went 2-2 with a 2.83 ERA in nine games • Struck out 59 batters in 54 innings.
