Tar Heels Roll to 16-1 Win Over Duke

DURHAM, N.C. -- Ryan Earey hit two homers and knocked in six runs and North Carolina racked up 19 base hits as the 14th-ranked Tar Heel baseball team rolled to a lopsided 16-1 win over the Duke Blue Devils Thursday afternoon in Atlantic Coast Conference baseball action at Jack Coombs Field. Carolina led 10-0 after four innings and never looked back in improving to 37-11, 9-10 in the ACC. Duke falls to 14-34, 4-15 in league play.
Ryan Snare moved to 8-1 on the season in getting the victory. Snare scattered eight hits over seven innings and allowed just one run while striking out seven batters. Jay Madeira pitched two perfect innings of relief out of the Tar Heel bullpen. Patrick Hannaway (1-5) took the loss for the Blue Devils after allowing nine runs on nine hits and five walks over 3.0 innings.
The Tar Heels drew four walks and scored three runs in a big first inning against the Blue Devils. Russ Adams's two-out, two-run double helped Carolina to a fast start in winning just its second ACC road game of the year. Carolina tacked on another run in the second, two in the third and a four-run fourth gave UNC the 10-0 lead.
Clay Hooper, who finished the game 2-for-4 with three runs and three RBIs, had a run-scoring double off the top of the wall in left field in the second and a two-run home run to left in the fourth. His two-run shot came after a two-run homer by Ryan Earey in the bottom of the third inning. Earey added a three-run shot in a five-run seventh and finished 2-for-4.
Adams also sparkled at the plate for Carolina, setting new career highs with four hits, four RBIs and three runs scored. Matt McCay, Ryan Mathews and Chad Prosser also each had two-hit games.
J.D. Alleva singled home Duke's only run of the game in the seventh after Matt Lynch led off the inning with his first triple.
The Tar Heels and Blue Devils continue their three-game series Friday at 3 p.m. Saturday's first pitch is scheduled for 1 p.m.
