Chapel Hill, N.C. - No. 10 North Carolina topped UNC Charlotte 8-4 Wednesday evening in a non-conference baseball matchup at Boshamer Stadium. One week after staking the 49ers an early 7-3 lead in Charlotte before rallying for a 14-10 victory, the Tar Heels put four runs on the board in the first and one more in the second for the early 5-0 cushion in winning its seventh straight game.
Scott Autrey (7-0) was credited with the victory in a staff game that saw the Tar Heels use six different pitchers. Autrey got the start and went three complete innings, allowing two runs on two hits while fanning three. UNCC starter Mike Taylor (2-3) gave up six runs on five hits and walked three over 3.1 innings for the loss.
Dan Moylan's two-run home run to centerfield highlighted the four-run first for Carolina. Adam Greenberg, 3-for-4 on the night while scoring three runs, led off with a single to right and Moylan's fourth homer of the season gave UNC a 2-0 lead. Clay Hooper and Tyrell Godwin also crossed home for the quick advantage.
In the second inning, Greenberg tripled down the line in right to move him into a third-place tie for most triples in a season at UNC with his sixth. Rip Ryan holds that record with eight in 1949, while current Tar Heel assistant Chad Holbrook had seven triples in 1993. Greenberg later scored in the inning on a Hooper sacrifice fly.
UNC Charlotte cut the Carolina lead to 5-2 with a pair of runs in the top of the third inning, but the Tar Heels scored two of their own in the fourth. Hooper had another sacrifice fly to centerfield to send home Ryan Earey, while Godwin's two-out single to left scored Greenberg.
radley Smith's fourth home run of the year, a two-out, two-run shot in the sixth inning off Tar Heel reliever Jay Madeira again cut the UNC lead to three runs at 7-4. Godwin answered for the Tar Heels with an RBI single, his third hit in the game. Godwin was 4-for-5 for the game and is hitting .786 (11-for-14) over the past three games.
Derrick DePriest struck out the side in the ninth to seal the victory.
Carolina stands 35-9 overall, while tonight's loss drops UNC Charlotte to 23-18 in 2000.
