CHAPEL HILL, N.C.-The University of North Carolina field hockey team began an important weekend of play with a 1-0 victory over Old Dominion on Saturday at Francis E. Henry Stadium. UNC improves its record to 5-1 while Old Dominion moves to 4-2.
"I was very impressed with our defensive effort," Tar Heel coach Karen Shelton said. "Old Dominion is always an intense battle. They apply tremendous pressure. It was a hard-fought battle and an even game."
UNC sweeper Abby Martin scored the game's only goal on a penalty corner with 22 seconds remaining in the first half. She was assisted on the goal by Abbey Woolley and Erin Cox. Martin also was credited with a defensive save.
The Tar Heels outshot ODU 15-11, while ODU led in penalty corner attempts 10-6. UNC goalkeeper Amy Tran recorded eight saves and ODU's Mary Beth Freeman had 11.
The Tar Heels were without their best defender, junior All-America Jana Toepel, who is competing with the U.S. National Team in Australia. Martin moved from her midfielder position to fill Toepel's absence. "Abby had an amazing game," Tran said. "I can't give her enough credit."
Carolina looks for its second ACC victory of the season Sunday against #5 Virginia (5-0). The game is scheduled for 1 p.m. at Francis E. Henry Stadium. "Virginia is a good team," said Shelton. "We look to use the same game plan as today."
