CHAPEL HILL, N.C.-The University of North Carolina field hockey team capped an impressive weekend of play with a 1-0 victory over Atlantic Coast Conference foe Virginia Sunday at Francis E. Henry Stadium. UNC improves to 6-1 on the season (2-0 ACC) while Virginia falls to 5-1 (0-1 ACC).
UNC forward Kristen McCann scored the game's only goal on a fastbreak with 7:33 left in the game. The speedy McCann stole the ball at midfield and took it in for an unassisted goal. "It was a superb field goal, absolutely brilliant," UNC coach Karen Shelton said. "Kristen is the fastest player we've ever had and she has been playing very well."
The Tar Heels outshot the Cavaliers 10-4 and doubled their penalty corner attempts with a 10-5 edge. UNC goalkeeper Amy Tran recorded two saves and UVA goalkeeper Becky Worthington had four.
On the heels of Saturday's 1-0 win over No. 2 Old Dominion, the victory against Virginia completes a weekend in which the Tar Heels went 2-0 against top-five opponents while playing without All-America back Jana Toepel. Toepel, who is competing in Australia with the U.S. National team, also will miss Carolina's next two games. "We are delighted with the weekend, but these games also have shown us where we need improvement, on our fitness and the execution of our offensive chances," Shelton said.
Carolina is back in action on Saturday, hosting Massachusetts at 11 a.m. James Madison visits on Sunday for a 1 p.m. game.
