Raleigh, NC--
If anyone ever said that Doak field was an easy place to win a ballgame as the visiting team, they were not very truthful. The highly ranked Tar Heel baseball squad was reminded just how great the home field advantage is for the Wolfpack as they fell 8-7.Again tonight, "The Doak" was packed with Wolfpack faithful, and (unfortunately for the Heels) their was an awful lot for them to howl about. In the second straight nail-biter of this huge rivalry series, the balance tilted toward the Wolfies in the final innings, and the boys in baby blue experienced their second straight Saturday night one run loss. The loss drops Carolina to 25-6 overall and 3-5 in the Atlantic Coast Conference. NC State improves to 4-7 in league play.
Carolina's talented pitching staff turned in a strong performance early in the game, but starter Kyle Snyder was rattled before being removed in the sixth inning. Derrick DePriest came in the game with another solid outing and Chris Elmore closed it out for UNC. DePriest took the loss for the Heels while Corey Mattison picked up the win.
In the end, it was missed offensive opportunities that cost the Tar Heels the game. With bases loaded in the seventh inning, Carolina was only able to pick up three runs despite several base hits and walks. The inning ended with two strikeouts and all three runners were stranded. Also, in the eighth inning, Dan Moylan was caught stealing after leading off with a single to center field. Had he been on base, Moylan would have scored the tying run on Hooper's single to center.
Carolina's offensive leaders were Tyrell Godwin who went 3 for 4 and Clay Hooper, who was 3 for 5. Ryan Earey hit the only home run of the game over the left field wall.
These same two teams will square off in the rubber match of the series on Easter Sunday at 1:30P.M.
