Raleigh, N.C. -- N.C. State freshman Dan D'Amato allowed just one run in 8.1 innings to outduel North Carolina sophomore Ryan Snare as the Wolfpack defeated the Tar Heels, 3-1, in a pitchers' duel Sunday afternoon at Doak Stadium. With the victory, N.C. State takes two of three games in the weekend series between the two teams and improves to 25-10, 5-7 in the Atlantic Coast Conference. Carolina, which has lost five of its last six ACC games, drops to 25-7, 3-6 ACC.
D'Amato (6-1) allowed seven hits and walked one while striking out four in his longest outing of the season. Corey Mattison pitched the final 0.2 innings for his fourth save of the season. Snare (2-2) was the hard-luck loser, allowing just four hits and one earned run in 7.0 innings while striking out a season-high nine. He was hurt by three Tar Heel errors, however, which allowed two unearned runs to score for the Wolfpack.
The Tar Heel batters were led by outfielder Tyrell Godwin, who went 2-for-3, and designated hitter Ryan Blake, who hit a solo home run in the fifth inning. Todd DeMakes had two of N.C. State's four hits in the game, going 2-for-4 with an RBI at the plate.
N.C. State took a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the second inning. Brian Ward reached first on a throwing error by UNC third baseman Ryan Earey, stole second and scored on an RBI single by DeMakes.
Carolina scored its only run of the game and tied the score at 1-1 in the top of the fifth when Blake knocked a 3-2 pitch from Dan D'Amato over the leftfield wall.
The Wolfpack retook the lead with two runs in the bottom of the sixth off Snare. DeMakes singled, advanced to second on a wild pitch, advanced to third when Josh Schmitt reached on an error by Earey and scored on a sacrifice fly by Curtis Sapp. Josh Ballard followed with a double down the leftfield line that scored Schmitt.
Carolina returns to action Tuesday evening at 7:00 p.m. versus Virginia Commonwealth in Boshamer Stadium.
