Bynum Improves To 3-0 As Tar Heels Top Temple, 11-4

Chapel Hill, N.C.-- Mike Bynum struck out nine batters and North Carolina took advantage of five Temple errors to defeat the Owls, 11-4, Friday afternoon at Boshamer Stadium. With the win, Carolina improved to 8-0 on the year, its best start since going 9-0 to begin the 1942 season. Temple fell to 0-1.
ynum (3-0) fanned nine batters and allowed five hits and four runs, one of them earned, to pick up the win. B.J. Finnerty made his first appearance since the 1996 season, pitching 2.2 shutout innings. Doug Bossert (0-1) took the loss for Temple.
Carolina got on the board quickly with six runs in the bottom of the first inning, sending 11 batters to the plate. Tyrell Godwin drove in two runs with a double down the rightfield line, Ryan Earey drove in a run with a fielder*s choice and Dan Moylan drove in a run with a single. The Tar Heel cause was aided by three Temple errors in the first. Godwin now has 18 RBI this season, one more than the 17 he had in all of 1998.
The Owls scored three unearned in the top of the second on three hits and two Tar Heel errors and a single run in the third on a double, a walk and two ground outs.
The Tar Heels added an insurance run in the fifth on a sacrifice fly by Chris LaMarsh and two runs in the sixth on an RBI double by Earey and an RBI single by Rob Miano.
Carolina and Temple will play a doubleheader Saturday beginning at 12:00 p.m. The game originally scheduled for Sunday afternoon has been moved to Saturday because of a forecast of rain Sunday.
