CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. - The University of Virginia's 18th-ranked men's swimming and diving team defeated 14th-ranked North Carolina in dual-meet action for the first time since 1993 Saturday afternoon, humbling the six-time defending ACC champion Tar Heels 135-108 in Charlottesville, Va.
The win over the Tar Heels establishes the Cavaliers as the prohibitive favorite to end North Carolina's six-year run as the ACC champion next month when the ACC Championships are held at College Park, Md., February 25-27, 1999.
The win for the Cavaliers improved their record this year to 6-3 overall, 3-2 in the ACC. Carolina fell to 7-2 overall and 2-1 in the ACC. The Tar Heels had won seven meets in a row since losing at sixth-ranked Georgia in the season opener. The victory by Virginia also ended a seven-meet winning streak for Carolina in ACC dual meets. The Heels last lost in the league at N.C. State in the final regular-season meet of the 1996-97 season.
Carolina won six of 13 events in the meet, but 1-2-3 finishes by Virginia in both the 1000-yard and 200-yard freestyle events doomed the Tar Heels to defeat. Despite the loss to the Cavaliers, the Tar Heels still lead the all-time series against UVA by a gaudy 38-8 margin.
In the women's meet, the 19th-ranked and defending ACC champion Cavaliers dominated the 18th-ranked Tar Heels 180-120. The win was Virginia's fourth against 20 losses in the series history. The Cavaliers also defeated the Tar Heels in Charlottesville this decade in 1993 and in 1997.
With the win, Virginia remains undefeated in dual meets this season, improving to 7-0 overall and 5-0 in the ACC. Carolina fell to 5-3-1 overall and 1-2 in the ACC. The only other time Carolina has ever lost two ACC dual matches in the same season in its history was 1987-88.
The Cavaliers will be favored to successfully defend their ACC Championship when the meet is held at College Park, Md. February 18-20, 1999.
UNC returns to the pool next Saturday when it plays host to a tri-meet in Chapel Hill with ACC rival Maryland and non-conference foe Virginia Tech. Both of those teams are unranked. Action will begin at the Maurice J. Koury Natatorium in Chapel Hill next Saturday at 12 noon.
