Chapel Hill, N.C. -- Jarrett Shearin went 3-for-5 with a double, two RBI and a career-high four stolen bases as No. 17 North Carolina defeated No. 22 Virginia Commonwealth, 10-3, Tuesday evening. Shearin scored a run in the fourth inning, the 200th run of his career. He also has 199 career runs batted in, making him one RBI short of becoming just the eighth player in Atlantic Coast Conference history to record both 200 career runs scored and 200 career RBI.
The win improved the No. 15 Tar Heels to 26-7 this season. No. 22 VCU fell to 25-7.
Michael Horney (4-0) picked up the win in relief for the Tar Heels, pitching 2.1 scoreless, two-hit innings. Chris Elmore got the start as a last-minute replacement for scheduled starter Corey Richardson. Elmore allowed three runs and struck out four in 4.2 innings. Ryan Costello (0-1) took the loss for VCU, allowing six hits, eight earned runs and six walks in 3.1 innings.
The Tar Heels jumped out to an early lead, scoring two runs in the first inning. Dan Moylan and Clay Hooper led off the inning with back-to-back singles and Ryan Earey loaded the bases with one out by drawing a walk. Tyrell Godwin drove in Moylan when he was hit by a pitch and Matt McCay drove in the second run of inning with a sacrifice bunt.
Carolina added two more runs in the second inning. Rob Miano and Moylan walked to lead off the inning. A groundout by Hooper on a hit-and-run play sent Miano and Moylan to second and third base with two outs. Jarrett Shearin then followed with a two-run double down the leftfield line for a 4-0 lead.
The Tar Heels manufactured two more runs in the third, scoring twice on an infield single and stolen base by Godwin, a sacrifice bunt and sacrifice fly, three walks and a wild pitch.
VCU scored a run in the fourth on an RBI single by Brian Mohr. The Rams loaded the bases with one out, but Elmore struck John Joseph and got Ian Caballero to fly out to end the inning with the bases loaded and Carolina still leading, 6-1.
After the Tar Heels added two more runs in the fourth to take an 8-1 lead, VCU scored two in the fifth. The Rams loaded the bases with no outs. Elmore got Kevin Elrod to ground into a double play that scored a run. Mohr followed with a run-scoring single.
Carolina added single runs in the sixth and eighth innings.
Carolina returns to action Friday when it begins a three-game weekend series at Maryland.
