Mike Bynum and Michael Horney combined for an eight-hit shutout as North Carolina downed Virginia Commonwealth 8-0 Saturday afternoon at frigid, wind-swept Riley Park in Charleston, S.C.
UNC won despite being out hit 8-6 as VCU recorded four errors. The Tar Heels scored their first five runs on just one hit, capitalizing on 3 VCU errors and two wild pitches.
Bynum (1-0), a junior left-hander from Middleburg, Fla., went six innings and gave up no runs on 4 hits, 6 strikeouts and 2 walks. Horney's three scoreless innings included 4 hits, 3 strikeouts and no walks.
Junior right-hander John Corn (1-1) started on the mound for VCU and took the loss. Korn was relieved by Davey Martin in the fifth, with Bo Acors pitching the last two innings.
Sophomore Ryan Earey had the game's only home run, a two-run shot over the center-field wall in the bottom of the eighth.
No Carolina batter had more than one hit. Dan Moylan, Clay Hooper and Ryan Blake each doubled.
The game was played in frigid conditions with the temperature in the mid-40's and winds gusting to 25 mph.
The Tar Heels (2-0, 0-0 ACC) play the host team The Citadel Sunday at 5:00 p.m. Corey Richardson will be on the mound for UNC.
Carolina's first home game is this Friday afternoon at 3:00 p.m. as the Heels begin a three-game series against the Seton Hall Pirates.
