The North Carolina Tar Heels finished unbeaten in the Winn-Dixie Shootout with a wild 8-5 win over The Citadel Sunday afternoon at Riley Park in Charleston, S.C.
Carolina (3-0, 0-0 ACC) led throughout the game, but had to survive serious Citadel threats in the last three innings as the Bulldogs ended the last three frames with the bases loaded.
Senior right-hander Corey Richardson (1-0) started and picked up the win for UNC, going six innings and giving up two runs on two hits, six strikeouts and five walks. Ryan Eary came on in the 8th and recorded his first save of the year.
Dallas McPherson (0-1) started and took the loss as the host team Bulldogs (0-3) were winless in the shootout.
Carolina led 4-0 going into the bottom of the 5th before the Citadel rallied for a pair of runs. UNC answered with one of their own in the seventh, but the Bulldogs came back with two more in the bottom of the eight to make it 5-4 UNC going into the last inning.
The Heels then pushed three runs across in the ninth on a two-run Jarrett Shearin double and a sacrifice fly by Tyrell Godwin. Shearin also had an RBI triple in the seventh.
The Citadel scored once in the bottom of the ninth before Earey got out of a bases-loaded jam.
Shearin, Dan Moylan and Clay Hooper each had two hits.
The frustrated Bulldogs left 13 men on base while Carolina stranded eight men.
Earey, Hooper and Moylan were each named to the All-Tournament team.
Carolina's first home game is this Friday afternoon at 3:00 p.m. as the Heels begin a three-game series against the Seton Hall Pirates.
