CHAPEL HILL, N.C.-In its highest-scoring game in two years, the University of North Carolina field hockey team improved to 11-3 on the season Friday afternoon with a 9-0 win over Virginia Commonwealth. The fourth-ranked Tar Heels led 5-0 at halftime and went on to earn their 10th consecutive win against VCU (2-11).
Seven players scored for the Tar Heels, three for their first time in their careers. Junior back Erin Cox and redshirt freshmen Lizzy Duffy and Stephanie Fuller all scored their first goals. "The whole team played well and everyone contributed," said junior forward Holly Huff, who scored two goals of her own. "Stephanie Fuller played amazing and it was great to see her, Lizzy and Erin all get their first goals."
Sophomore Abby Martin opened the scoring on a penalty corner with 20:40 remaining in the first half. After back-to-back goals by Huff, junior Kristen McCann scored her first of two. Cox scored on a penalty corner to put the halftime score at 5-0. McCann scored to open the second half then assisted on Fuller's goal. Junior Jana Toepel scored her second goal of the season before Duffy finalized the score with her goal.
McCann and Huff each totaled five points, on two goals and an assist. Heading into the game, Huff had scored four points in the entire season.
