CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va.-In a steady rain, visiting North Carolina beat Virginia 2-0 Sunday to improve its record to 12-3 on the season. Virginia is now 9-5.
More than three-quarters of the game had elapsed before either team managed to score. Junior forward Kristen McCann finally got the Tar Heels on the board with 12:15 remaining in the game. On UNC's only penalty corner of the afternoon, McCann tipped in junior Jana Toepel's shot for what proved to be the winning goal.
The Tar Heels scored again with 3:40 left in the game. With 3:53 to play, Virginia's Carrie Goodloe had been assessed a yellow card, putting the Cavaliers down a player for the rest of the game. On the restart, UNC ran a breakaway and McCann sent the ball across the goal, where junior Holly Huff knocked it in for her fourth goal in the past three games.
It was UNC's second meeting and second win of the season against Virginia. On Sept. 19, Carolina won 1-0 in Chapel Hill.
Carolina plays next on Saturday, when Maryland visits for the Tar Heels' final ACC game of the regular season. (UNC is now 2-1 in the conference. Sunday's game did not count toward the ACC totals.) The Maryland game, which begins at 1 p.m. at Francis E. Henry Stadium, has been designated as Fan Appreciation Day and will feature giveaways throughout the afternoon.
