Greg Gatz is in his 24th year as director of strength and conditioning for Olympic sports and 26th overall. While overseeing the facility management and organization of 25 varsity athletic teams, Gatz is directly in charge of program design and installation for baseball along with men's and women's soccer. He was promoted to assistant athletic director in 2021.
Gatz has worked with several National Champion teams at Carolina including women's soccer (1999, 2000, 2003, 2006, 2008, 2009, 2012), men's soccer (2001 and 2011), a volleyball team that finished with one of its highest national ranking ever (No. 7) in 2014, as well as the baseball team's seven recent appearances in the College World Series (2006, 2007, 2008, 2009, 2011, 2013, 2018).
In 2009 Gatz authored “Complete Conditioning for Soccer” (Human Kinetics Publishing) training book, highlighting a multidimensional training approach to the sport of Soccer. Gatz has also presented at numerous conferences and clinics over the years, including the National Strength and Conditioning Association Conference, on various training topics.
Prior to joining the staff at UNC, Gatz spent 11 years as a high school physical education teacher and coach in the Orlando, Fla., area.
A 1983 graduate of Ithaca (N.Y.) College, Gatz competed in football and track while receiving a degree in physical education. He is a Certified Strength and Conditioning Specialist through the National Strength and Conditioning Association.
