Women’s Tennis Continues ITA All-American Run

CARY, N.C. – Carolina women's tennis began Main Draw play at the ITA All-American Championships on Wednesday.
All four Tar Heels competing in singles picked up wins to advance to the next round of Main Draw. Anna Frey got the day started with another dominant, ranked win. The sophomore topped No. 116 Olivia Traynor 6-2, 6-0 to earn her 11th consecutive win this fall.
No. 21 Tatum Evans followed with a three-set win over her opponent from Virginia. Evans cruised through set one before dropping a close second set, 7-5. The senior bounced back to take the third in dominant fashion, 6-1.
After winning a tight first set, No. 95 Nicole Khirin won the second set to secure her third win of the tournament.
The Tar Heels kept the momentum rolling in singles as No. 85 Alexis Nguyen pulled out a gritty win against her opponent from Georgia. The freshman won the first set after a tiebreak and fought to take the second, 6-4.
In doubles, two Carolina duos came home with a win to advance to the round of 16. No. 14 Frey/Hamilton swept no. 29 Webster/Ray from Vanderbilt to start their run at All-Americans. No. 8 Zampardo/Maltby recorded the second win of the day for the Tar Heels in doubles action after winning their match off a third set tiebreak.

The Intercollegiate Tennis Association will hold their 43rd annual All-American Championship this coming week. The tournament continues to highlight the nation's top tennis players while providing the athletes an opportunity to clinch a spot at the NCAA Singles and Doubles Championships.
Ten singles players will qualify for the NCAA Singles Championship (eight main draw quarterfinalists & two feed-in consolation finalists). Meanwhile, five doubles teams (5) will qualify for the NCAA Doubles Championship through the All-American Championships (four main draw semifinalists, consolation champion).
