Heels Cruise To 8-4 Win Over Charlotte
April 8, 2026 | Baseball
CHAPEL HILL, N.C. – Five runs in the second inning allowed Carolina baseball to control the game in an 8-4 win over Charlotte on Tuesday night in Boshamer Stadium.
Â
The No. 6 Tar Heels (28-5-1) jumped out early and never looked back, giving the traveling 49ers no momentum to get back into the contest. The victory maintains UNC's stellar record in the midweek, a flawless 10-0 with a 17-1-1 mark outside of conference play.
Â
Outside of a top of the ninth blip that gave Charlotte some consolation runs, Carolina's pitching staff was stellar once again in keeping their opponents at arm's length. Prior to that final frame, Jackson Rose, Camron Seagraves, and Tom Chmielewski combined to hold the 49ers to just four hits and one run while striking out seven.
Â
Seagraves, coming on strong as the Heels hit the heart of their season, picked up the win with 2.0 innings of shutout, hitless work. Carolina has now gotten their last nine wins from a bullpen arm.
Â
Chmielewski put together his longest outing as a Tar Heel with 3.1 IP with two hits, one run, two punchouts and no walks. He is the 10th UNC pitcher to eclipse the 3.0 innings pitched mark in a game, showing off the depth of weapons head coach Scott Forbes has to choose from.
Â
Gavin Gallaher and Colin Hynek led the way at the plate, each contributing a pair of hits and RBIs. The duo bookended the scoring run in the bottom of the second with RBI doubles. Gallaher actually legged out what would have been his third career triple, but his slide took him a mere inch off the bag as the tag was being applied.
Â
Rom Kellis V provided the other big hit in that frame, knocking a single to center that brought in Hynek and Tyler Howe. Kellis is hitting .333 on the season in his 18 games as continues to see his playing time increase.
Â
The Tar Heels hit the road once again this weekend for a showdown with Clemson. Friday and Saturday will appear on ACCNX before Sunday's contest which is slated to be aired on ESPN2.
