Tar Heels Stumble In ACC Opener, 13-3
March 6, 2026 | Baseball
CHAPEL HILL, N.C. – North Carolina baseball dropped a 13-3 seven-inning contest against Virginia in the opening game of conference play on Friday afternoon in Boshamer Stadium.
Â
The No. 8 Tar Heels (12-2-1) surrendered a season-high in runs and allowed their first multi-home run game of the year as the visitors controlled the game throughout. It's only the second time in the last three seasons that UNC has lost in the opening game of a home series.
Â
Virginia's offense put them out in front early, scratching one across in the first on a sac-fly before scoring four in the third and three in the fourth. The Cavaliers put a runner on base in every inning and scored in six of the seven.
Â
Jason DeCaro got the start and picked up his first loss of the season, giving up a season-high five runs in his 3.0 innings of work. The Carolina staff as a whole allowed 13 hits, eight free passes, and five wild pitches.
Â
UNC mustered just five hits, all singles, and three runs in a quiet day at the plate. Outfielder Owen Hull had two of the five base knocks and added an RBI with his second in the bottom of the sixth.
Â
The Heels lost their ACC opener last season in a similar fashion, 13-9, to Stanford before eventually rattling off an 18-11 conference record. They will look to bounce back with a double header tomorrow. First pitch of the first game is scheduled for 1 p.m. ET.
