Women’s Tennis Returns To ACC Play Sunday At SMU

CHAPEL HILL, N.C. – No. 3 University of North Carolina women's tennis will return to ACC action Sunday against SMU in Dallas, Texas. The Tar Heels and Mustangs will begin play at 1 p.m. ET. This weekend's matchup is the first road ACC match for Carolina this season.
Sunday marks just the second meeting between the teams. The programs have only clashed once since SMU joined the ACC two years ago. Carolina hosted SMU and collected a 4-0 sweep during the 2025 season.
In singles competition, the Tar Heels are familiar with no. 66 Sophie Llewellyn from the Mustangs. No. 1 Reese Brantmeier faced Llewellyn in the second round of the 2025 NCAA Singles National Championship. Brantmeier earned a three-set win en route to winning the singles national title.

- Reese Brantmeier was named ACC Player of the Week for the second consecutive week (Feb. 3) after having another standout weekend for the Tar Heels going 2-0 in singles and 1-1 in doubles while helping lead the team to two top-10 wins. Both of Brantmeier's singles wins clinched the team win for Carolina against no. 9 NC State and no. 1 Georgia.
- Reese Brantmeier and doubles partner Alanis Hamilton were tabbed ACC Doubles Team of the Week on Jan. 27 after topping two ranked opponents from Virginia and Charlotte. The duo has gone 5-1 to start the season.
- Oby Kajuru was tabbed ACC Player of the Week on Jan. 20 for the first time since she joined the program. No. 23 Oby Kajuru defeated no. 5 Savannah Dada-Mascoll from App State for the first ranked singles win among the Tar Heels this season. The win helped the graduate earn the weekly honor from the league.
- The Tar Heels downed no. 14 Virginia, 6-1, for their first ranked win of the 2026 campaign.
- With the team's win over App State, head coach Brian Kalbas reached 800 career wins. Kalbas remains the winningest active coach in NCAA tennis and just the third all-time to reach 800 wins.
- Freshman Anna Frey has started her collegiate career 10-1 in singles and 5-1 in doubles matches with partner Tatum Evans.
- Partners Brantmeier/Hamilton and Kajuru/Maltby earned All-America honors in the fall after reaching the quarterfinals at the NCAA Individual Championships.
- Reese Brantmeier won the 2025 NCAA Singles National Championship and headed into the spring ranked no. 1 in singles.
- Brantmeier earned All-America honors in singles this fall making the senior eight-for-eight in All-America selections across her career.
- Carolina ranked no. 3 for the fifth consecutive week in the ITA Team Rankings.
