August 14, 2025 | Men's Tennis
Former members of the University of North Carolina men's tennis team have continued the program's longstanding tradition of success on the Association of Tennis Professionals (ATP) Tour this summer.
This week at the Serve First Open in Sumter, S.C., a quartet of Tar Heels have been in action: Ryan Seggerman, Karl Poling, Mac Kiger and former volunteer assistant coach Reese Stalder.
Poling picked up one of the best wins of his pro career on Wednesday when he came from behind to top Great Britain's Daniel Evans, 1-6, 6-4, 6-4 in the round of 32. On Thursday in the round of 16, Poling will face Japan's Shintaro Mochizuki.
Seggerman, who dropped his singles match on Wednesday in Sumter, will team with fellow American P. Trhac as the fourth-seeded doubles team that will meet wild-card entries Max Westphal and Theo Winegar.
Also in the doubles round of 16, Kiger will join American Trey Hildebrand in a match against American Vasil Kirkov and Bart Stevens of The Netherlands.
Stalder and Chines Taipei's Jason Jung will play in the doubles quarterfinals in Sumter against Germans Jakob Schnaitter and Mark Wallner.
Furthermore, former Tar Heel All-America Rinky Hijikata hopes to qualify for next week's US Open in Flushing Meadow, N.Y. Since turning professional, Hijikata has won the 2023 Australian Open doubles championship and reached the final of the 2025 Wimbledon doubles championship, while also being a rising star on the singles circuit.
