Four Tar Heel Men Earn NCAA Bids Saturday
November 8, 2025 | Men's Tennis
CHAPEL HILL, N.C.—Four Tar Heels earned trips to the NCAA Singles and Doubles Championships on an exciting Saturday during the third day of action at the Men's ITA East Sectional at the Chewning Tennis Center.
Senior Roan Jones, freshman Ian Mayew and junior Niels Ratiu all grabbed NCAA singles bids by reaching the sectional semifinals with wins on Saturday, while the doubles team of Mayew and Kase Schinnerer advanced to the sectional final to nail a doubles bid.
Jones earned an NCAA Singles Championship berth for the second year in a row after doing so last year while playing at the University of Alabama. On Saturday, he came from behind to beat Clemson's Henrik Bladelius in three sets, 4-6, 6-1, 6-2. Jones advances and will face Melchior Delloye of Harvard on Sunday in the sectional semifinals.
Mayew joined Jones in the semis with a three-set win over Virginia's Mans Dahlberg. Mayew won the first set, 7-6 (4), then dropped the second set, 5-7 before taking the third frame, 6-3.
Ratiu also won in three sets to earn his first NCAA Singles berth. He broke Wake Forest's Joaquin Guilleme to take a 6-5 lead in the third set, then held serve to finish things off by a score of 6-3, 2-6, 7-5.
Mayew and Ratiu will face off on Sunday with a trip to the sectional final on the line.
Mayew and fellow freshman Schinnerer won an all-Tar Heel doubles semifinal on Saturday afternoon by a score of 3-6, 6-3, 1-0 (7) over teammates Nick Mangiapane and Anthony Wright. Mayew and will meet Aaron Sandler and Manfredi Graziani of the University of Pennsylvania in the doubles final on Sunday.
The Tar Heel doubles team of Ratiu and Chris Xu qualified for the NCAA Championship last month based on their win in the ITA Carolina Regional in Cary, giving Carolina two doubles duos and three singles players in the NCAA Championships later this month.
The ITA Sectional Championships are the last chance for players to qualify for the 2025 NCAA Singles and Doubles Championships next month in Orlando.
Each 2025 ITA Sectional Championship will have a draw size of 32 players in singles and 16 doubles teams. From this, six singles players from each section (24 nationally) will qualify for the NCAA Singles Championship (semifinalists and two quarterfinal playoff winners from each sectional).
Meanwhile, three doubles teams from each section (12 total) will qualify for the NCAA Doubles Championship through the Sectional Championships (champion, finalist, third place).
The ITA East Sectional will conclude at the Chewning Tennis Center on Sunday.
