Jones Wins First-Round Match To Wrap Day 1 Of Men's NCAA Singles

ORLANDO—Roan Jones' first-round victory highlighted Tuesday's first day of action at the 2025-26 NCAA Singles Championship at the USTA National Campus for members of the University of North Carolina men's tennis team.
Jones was the third Tar Heel to see the court and rallied past South Carolina's Paul Barbier Gazeu, 6-4, 1-6, 6-3. He won the first set, lost the second and led the third, 5-1, before finishing with the 6-3 decision in the final frame. Jones will face Ozan Baris of Michigan State in the round of 32 on Wednesday.
Earlier in the day, freshman Ian Mayew and junior Niels Ratiu both lost their initial NCAA matches.
Sebastian Gorzny of Texas defeated Mayew, 6-3, 7-6 (2) on Tuesday morning in one of the first matches of the day. Gorzny was the top seed in the 2024-25 NCAA Singles Championship with the Longhorns and won the clinching match in the 2024 NCAA team championship for TCU before transferring to Texas.
In the afternoon, UC Santa Barbara's Lucca Liu topped Ratiu in three sets. Ratiu won the first set, 6-3, before dropping the second by a score of 7-5. He rallied after trailing, 4-2, in the third set to force a tiebreaker and led the tiebreaker, 4-2, before ultimately falling, 7-4.
Action from Orlando will resume on Wednesday with both singles and doubles action. The Tar Heel doubles teams of Mayew with Kase Schinnerer and Ratiu with Chris Xu will begin action in the round of 32.
Carolina's combined five participants in this fall's NCAA Singles and Doubles Championships are the most in a single year in program history.
