Hijikata & Pel Fall In Wimbledon Doubles Final
July 12, 2025 | Men's Tennis
LONDON, ENGLAND—Fifth-seeded Julian Cash and Lloyd Glasspool ended former Tar Heel Rinky Hijikata's doubles run at Wimbledon when the British duo beat Hijikata and David Pel, 6-2, 7-6 (3), on Centre Court on Saturday afternoon at the storied All England Lawn Tennis Club.
In the process, Cash and Glasspool won their 14th consecutive match and became the first all-British male duo to win Wimbledon since 1936.
Hijikata and Pel saw their Cinderella run from alternate entry to the Wimbledon final come to an end. The pair hadn't met until they began playing together in London for this event.
Cash and Glasspool started with a bang and were dominant in the first set. The British duo broke Pel twice and took a 5-1 lead. Hijikata held serve in both of his serving games but he and Pel dropped the set, 6-2.
Pel held serve in the first game of the second set, but Cash and Glasspool broke him again later in the set to take a 3-2 lead. A solid return by Hijikata forced an error and allowed he and Pel to tie the set at 4-4. In the next game, Pel held serve to take a 5-4 lead. Two games later, Hijikata held serve to take a 6-5 lead. After Cash and Glasspool held in the next game, the British duo took the tiebreak, 7-3.
