Diamond Heels Roll To 14-3 Run Rule Defeat Of Queens
May 1, 2025 | Baseball
Â
The Tar Heels (35-10, 15-9 ACC) made it back-to-back games in double figures thanks to their second straight night with a huge offensive inning. After scoring eight in a frame on Tuesday, the Heels outdid themselves on Wednesday with a nine run fourth.
Â
The inning started with a pop out before 10 straight Carolina batters reached base safely from seven hits and three errors from the Royals. UNC's batting average leader Alex Madera (.335) would booked in the run with a pair of singles, the second driving in a pair of runners to put the Heels up nine.
Â
Madera has been North Carolina's best bat over the last couple of weeks and he stayed hot in this one. He would go 3-for-4 on Wednesday night with a Carolina-career high four RBIs and his second home run in the last six days after having not had one the entire year prior.
Â
Every single member of the Tar Heel batting order reached safely in some form or another in that chaotic fourth inning. It was the second time this season the team has put nine across in one frame.
Â
Prior to Carolina's offensive explosion, the Royals actually held a lead at two different points thanks to a slew of good hitting in the first and the third. The deficits meant that this was the second time ever (both this season) that Carolina has gone on to a run-rule despite trailing in the game.
Â
The first of Jackson Van De Brake's three RBIs on the day, a sac fly that scored Kane Kepley, tied the game for the final time in the third.
Â
The game's final blow came from the bat of Hunter Stokely, who launched an absolute no-doubter 354 feet to walk it off in the eighth. The veteran third baseman's 12th home run of the year was technically the first walk-off bomb of the year for North Carolina.
Â
True freshman Camron Seagraves was the star on the mound for the home team. The young flamethrower set new career bests in innings pitched (3.1) and strikeouts (7) while only giving up one hit for no runs.
Â
Cameron Padgett and Cale Bolton each put in an inning of work to finish out the game for the Tar Heels, neither allowed a run.
Â
North Carolina will take a rare mid-season weekend off before returning to the Bosh for a big week of home games. Next Tuesday, the Tar Heels will host Campbell with a weekend series against NC State waiting on the other side.
