Baseball Loses Saturday Contest To Pitt, 4-2
April 26, 2025 | Baseball
PITTSBURGH, Pa. – On a chilly April day in the Steel City, North Carolina baseball fell short against Pitt, 4-2. The two teams will meet back up on Sunday for the rubber match.
Â
The Tar Heels (32-10, 14-9 ACC) offense, that scored 15 runs on seven homers the night before, was kept in check for the majority of this contest. They made things interesting late with solo home runs in back-to-back innings, but couldn't quite find the sequence to get back level.
Â
Sophomore Gavin Gallaher, fresh off tying the school record for home runs in a game with three on Friday night, launched his fourth of the series 391 feet out to right field. He his batting .459 with eight home runs, 15 runs scored, and 23 RBIs in his last ten games for Carolina.
Â
Right fielder Tyson Bass followed Gallaher's blast with one of his own two batters later, another shot over the fence in right. It gave the North Carolina Wesleyan transfer back-to-back games with a home run for the first time as a Tar Heel and it cut the Pitt lead to two in the eighth inning.
Â
Carolina couldn't build off the two long balls, and was unable to overcome the four unanswered Panther runs to start the game. The loss ends a nine-game winning streak for UNC over Pitt and sets up a series decider on Sunday.
Â
UNC starter Aidan Haugh gave up a season-high eight hits in his 5.0 innings, but worked out of bases-loaded jams twice with double plays to keep more Pitt runs off the board. The three double plays in the game were a season-high for the Tar Heel defense.
Â
Big righty Olin Johnson came in and was stellar in relief, pitching a shutout with no-hits across his 3.0 innings. The Bellingham, Wash., native has been a huge boost out of the bullpen for the Heels, only allowing eight hits and three runs across his last 11 appearances (19.1 IP). Â
Â
The Tar Heels will look to bounce back and secure the series on Sunday afternoon. First pitch from Charles L. Cost field is scheduled for 1 p.m. ET with coverage coming on ACCNX.
