Diamond Heels Throw First No-Hitter This Century In Win Over Gardner-Webb
April 2, 2025 | Baseball
CHAPEL HILL, N.C. – North Carolina baseball did on Tuesday night what it had not done yet this century, throwing a no-hitter in its run-rule 11-1 win over Gardner-Webb.
Â
The Tar Heels (22-7, 6-6 ACC) completed their first combined no-no since Chris Elmore and Ryan Earey kept Towson off the board in March of 1999. It's just the program's third no-hitter of any kind since at least 1978.
Â
Folger Boaz (3.0), Olin Johnson (3.0) and Camron Seagraves (1.0) were phenomenal throughout, recording eight strikeouts and just one walk on the historic night.
Â
"I've never been a part of one," head coach Scott Forbes said following the no-hitter. "I've coached so many great pitchers in my time here and I thought Folger [Boaz] was outstanding tonight. He needed that. Olin, again, has been Olin. He was outstanding. It was good to get Cam back out there. We had a Plan A coming into tonight and this was it. I think it worked out perfectly."
Â
The starter Boaz was efficient and electric in his three frames, staying locked in despite a pair of errors and a wild pitch giving Gardner-Webb the lead in the second inning. It was undeniably the best outing back on the bump this season for the sophomore lefty, who continues to battle back from last year's Tommy John surgery.
Â
Johnson and Seagraves were just as effective for the Tar Heels. The duo racked up four punchouts and only allowed one base runner in four innings of relief to finish off the monumental occasion. Johnson has been a revelation out of the bullpen this season, posting a 0.79 ERA in seven appearances.
Â
While the pitchers were busy shoving on the mound, the Carolina bats were carrying their weight to wrap this game up in seven on Tuesday night. 11 runs on 10 hits powered the Heels to their third run-rule win of the season.
Â
Hunter Stokely kicked things off with a two-out, two-run bomb to deep center in the bottom of the third that took the Tar Heels from trailing to on top 2-1. It was the veteran's 10th home run of the year, and it put him back in front of Luke Stevenson for the team lead in long balls.
Â
The big offensive explosion came in the bottom of the sixth, as Carolina assembled its highest scoring inning of the year by bringing nine home. Sam Angelo started the spree with a two-run shot the opposite way that scored Tyson Bass. The pair would later bookend the inning with a two-RBI triple from Bass and an RBI double from Angelo, making them both the first Tar Heels to get hits in the same frame this season.
Â
In between the heroics from those two, Forbes' team got big RBIs from Perry Hargett and Stokely. Hargett came in to pinch hit with two runners on and scored them both with a double in his first action since March 19. Stokely smoked a fly-ball to the warning track that was misplayed by the Runnin' Bulldogs' left fielder and brought in a pair of Heels.
Â
The nine runs represented the highest-scoring inning for Carolina since having 11 in the 12-2 Friday win over Princeton last year. It is the first time under Forbes the team has gone from trailing in a game to a run-rule win. Â
Â
The momentum boost could not have come at a better time, as the team prepares to take on rivals Duke this weekend in Boshamer Stadium. The first game of the series is set for Thursday night at 7 p.m. ET live on ACC Network.
