Women’s Tennis Battles Past NC State Into ACC Final, 4-1
April 19, 2025 | Women's Tennis
CARY, N.C. – Facing off against NC State in the semifinals of the 2025 ACC Women's Tennis Championships in Cary, No. 2 seeded North Carolina fought off a tough No. 3 seed in NC State, 4-1, to advance to Sunday's final.
"To beat NC State in doubles is great, they're really strong in doubles and pride themselves on it," said head coach Brian Kalbas. "Reese [Brantmeier] and Alanis [Hamilton] at No. 1 beat one of the best teams in the country. That was a huge win, and it was decisive. We tried to block out the noise and focus on ourselves and what we needed to do. We knew the doubles point was going to be tough, but we felt if we won that it would make an easier path and doable."
The Tar Heels remain hot, as Carolina has won 15 of its last 16 matches and sits at 23-4 overall.
Setting the tone, Brantmeier and Hamilton came out swinging with a swift 6-1 victory over NC State's No. 8 nationally ranked doubles squad of Gabriella Broadfoot and Maddy Zampardo. The Tar Heel duo continues to cruise on No. 1 in doubles, earning its 20th victory of the season.
Battling past a pesky Wolfpack pair, Susanna Maltby and Carson Tanguilig banded together to pull away with a 6-4 win on No. 2 to earn Carolina the doubles point. The pair is now 19-5 overall this season.
Carolina has clinched the doubles point in 24 out of 25 matches this season.
Brantmeier remained hot, clinching Carolina's first singles point of the day with a win on No. 1 at 7-5, 6-2. She remains an anchor, sitting 16-1 this season in singles play.
Following quickly after her teammate, Claire Hill earned her second win this week in Cary in two sets on No. 6 at 7-5, 6-1.
Fighting back on No. 5 after dropping the first set, 3-6, Tanguilig rattled off two straight sets at 6-1, 6-4 to push the Tar Heels past the Wolfpack and into Sunday's final.
