CHAPEL HILL, N.C.—The sixth-ranked North Carolina women's tennis team shutout No. 64 Florida State, 4-0, for its fifth consecutive victory on a sunny Senior Day on Sunday at the Chewning Tennis Center. Tatum Evans won the clinching singles match.
The match marked the final home regular season match for graduating seniors Carson Tanguilig and Lindsay Zink.
With the win, the Tar Heels completed the regular season with a record of 20-4 overall and 11-1 in the Atlantic Coast Conference. Carolina has won 13 of its last 14 matches. UNC finished second in the conference standings behind 12-0 Duke and just ahead of Virginia and NC State (both 10-2). The Tar Heels thus will be the second seed in next week's ACC Championship in Cary.
The Seminoles lost their second match in a row and dropped to 13-9 and 4-8 in the ACC.
"The most notable thing about today was that our seniors played great," assistant coach Tyler Thomson said. "They were victorious, they had a great crowd and it's a culmination of their growth here that they're playing really well at the end of their careers. We're confident going into the ACC Tournament. We've had really good practices in the last couple of weeks, and I think we're playing our best tennis of the year right now."
Carolina won the doubles point for the 22nd time in 24 matches this season to take a 1-0 lead. Tanguilig and Susanna Maltby cruised by FSU's Millie Bissett and Tina Lia, 6-1, at No. 2 to start the afternoon. Tanguilig and Maltby improved to 18-5 this season. The pair has lost just one combined game in its last three wins.
Several minutes later, Zink and Theadora Rabman stopped Laura Putz and Maelie Monfils, 6-3, at No. 3. Moments afterward, the eighth-ranked Tar Heel duo of Reese Brantmeier and Alanis Hamilton beat #76 Maria Juliana Parra Romero and Eva Shaw, 7-5. Brantmeier and Hamilton won their seventh consecutive match and improved to 18-2 this season as a duo, 9-1 in the ACC.
