Women's Golf Head Coach Position Endowed To Honor Bobby Galloway
April 10, 2025 | Women's Golf
Carolina Athletics and The Rams Club are excited to announce a $5.5 million gift to endow the women's golf head coaching position and to support an indoor putting practice area in the future Carolina Golf team building. The transformative gift from an unnamed donor honors the late Bobby Galloway, a standout on the Carolina men's golf team, professional golfer and longtime friend of the Tar Heel golf programs.
Â
The endowed head coaching position for women's golf is just the second at Carolina along with women's lacrosse. The new team building for the men's and women's golf programs was recently approved for construction and is scheduled to break ground in fall 2025.
Â
"When I first heard about the gift, I was shocked in the best way possible," said Aimee Neff, the Bobby Galloway Women's Golf Head Coach. "I am incredibly touched to know the support we are receiving, especially in a time when there is so much instability in college sports. It means the world to us. I'm so grateful."
Â
Endowing a head coach position is a strategic way to provide lasting benefits to directly enhance a program's success. It guarantees long-term funding and ensures financial stability.
Â
"We are grateful for this generous gift, which will provide important resources and elevate our women's golf program," said Director of Athletics Bubba Cunningham. "Our donors wanted to celebrate Bobby Galloway because of his passion for golf and for sharing the game he loved. This is a fitting and outstanding way to honor his legacy."
Â
The family behind the generous donation could not think of a better way to honor their loved one than through sustainable support of Carolina Golf. The family emphasized Galloway's interest in patiently teaching the game he loved and the competitive development of the Carolina women's golf program.
Â
Galloway excelled athletically and academically at UNC and throughout his life. He was the fifth inductee into the Order of Merit at UNC, demonstrating exceptional academic achievement and leadership. He lettered for the Tar Heels in 1959 and 1960 and was captain in 1960, when Carolina won the ACC title. That same year, he was a quarterfinalist at the NCAA Championships and led the Tar Heels to a fourth-place finish.
Â
The indoor putting practice area is part of the second phase of renovations at Finley Golf Club. Finley was recently renovated by World Golf Hall of Famer and Tar Heel alum Davis Love III. The course was re-done and a team practice facility was installed. Phase 2 of that renovation, which was recently approved for construction, will include a two-story team building featuring upgraded locker rooms, lounges, offices, meeting spaces and study areas. The building will also include a public lobby highlighting historical memorabilia from UNC golf.
