California Defeats Men's Soccer, 2-1

CHAPEL HILL, N.C. – Eleventh-seeded California (7-7-2) defeated No. 6 North Carolina (9-4-4), 2-1, in the first round of 2024 ACC Men's Soccer Championship.
How It Happened
• In the fifth frame, Alfredo Ortiz's free kick was halted by Andrew Cordes.
• Two minutes later, Luke Hille's shot attempt was blocked, followed by the Tar Heel forward striking the top right corner of the goal, giving Carolina a 1-0 edge.
• The Golden Bears and Tar Heels had a shot saved in the 21st and 28th minute, respectively.
• Off a free kick in the 39th minute, Ortiz's shot attempt was denied by Cordes.
• Before the half, Juan Caffaro fed Martin Vician, who's header was stopped.
• California tied the match in the 64th, as Santiago Hopkins' throw in was corralled and scored by Malcolm Zalayet.
• Ten minutes later, Parker O'Ferral riffled a shot from the top of the box.
• In the 78th minute following VAR, Jameson Charles was called for a foul inside the box. California's Ortiz converted on the penalty kick, helping the Golden Bears advance.
