November 22, 2024 | Volleyball
CHAPEL HILL, N.C. – Carolina volleyball (20-6, 12-5 ACC) picked up a big win on Senior Night over California (12-17, 4-13 ACC) in four sets (22-25, 25-18, 25-21, 25-19) on Friday night.
Â
The Golden Bears came out firing and took the first set, but the Tar Heels would regroup in a major way. The second started with UNC racing out to a commanding 9-2 lead. Cal responded by cutting the lead to 11-7. The Tar Heels widened the gap again, scoring four of the next five. They used that run and never looked back, winning 25-18.
Â
The third set was a back and forth affair but after taking a 2-1 lead early, the Golden Bears let the Tar Heels snag the lead and then they could only manage to get within two points for the rest of the set.
Â
The fourth was much like the third, back and forth early. It was tied at 9-9 but six of the following eight points would go to Carolina. With an 18-15 lead, Mabrey Shaffmaster put the game away, with the next five Carolina kills and a block to make it 24-18. Safi Hampton ended the match with the final of her 13 kills.
