Box Score

DALLAS – No. 20 Carolina volleyball fell to No. 5 SMU on Friday afternoon in three sets (15-25, 15-25, 15-25).

Safi Hampton led the team with eight kills, and Jackie Taylor led with four blocks. Taylor now has 404 career blocks, moving her just five away from the eighth most in program history.

Carolina struggled to get any sort of rhythm in the two sets. The longest run it was able to sustain was 2-0. Anytime it felt like UNC might be able to grab momentum, the Mustangs took it back and went on a run of their own.

The Carolina block couldn't get rolling in frames one and two with only one block in each set. Each of the first two sets ended 25-15 to put the Tar Heels' backs against the wall.

Carolina used a 3-0 run to take a 4-2 lead in the third set but SMU out paced the Tar Heels 11-4 after that to force a timeout.

UNC used a 5-0 run out of the media timeout to cut the deficit to 15-14. After that, a 4-1 SMU run gave the Mustangs distance and forced another UNC timeout. The run continued out of the timeout, and SMU went on to win the set 25-15 to take the match in three.

The match marked the first time the Tar Heels hit in the negatives since Nov. 24, 2024, against Stanford.

UNC now shifts its focus to a road match with No. 2 Pitt on Sunday at 1 p.m. on ACCNX.
