Volleyball Completes Weekend Sweep, Defeats Virginia 3-2

CHARLOTTESVILLE, VA – Carolina volleyball (15-2, 7-1 ACC) took down Virginia (15-4, 5-3 ACC) in five sets (25-16,16-25, 25-22, 22-25,15-11) on Sunday to extend its win streak against the Cavaliers to five matches.
Carolina opened the first set with two separate 4-0 runs, including when Zoe Behrendt delivered three service aces in a row. Behrendt has had the hot hand recently, producing three service aces for the past three games and five times this season. The offensive success continued for the Tar Heels to a .304 hitting percentage compared to .143 from UVA.
The Tar Heels ran into an offensive slump in the second set, trailing behind by 10, but turned around the match courtesy of a service ace from Safi Hampton. Carolina went on a 7-1 run to cut the deficit down to five, but ultimately could not come back, dropping its first set of the weekend 16-25.Â
The third set started out close 7-7, but UVA went on a run forcing Carolina to take a time out at 13-19. The Tar Heel rattled off another 7-1 run tying the third set 20-20. Virginia was called for four touches coming out of the tie, which gave UNC their first lead since 2-1 early in the set. North Carolina closed out the third set on a 3-0 run to win 25-22.
After a dominant fourth set from the Cavaliers, Carolina dropped its second set 25-22.
In the fifth set the Tar Heels went back and forth with their Atlantic Coast Conference foes. Virginia tied the final set at 11 and Carolina responded by scoring four points in a row to win 15-11.
NOTABLES:
Mabrey Shaffmaster recorded her 100th career match.
Shaffmaster is five service aces away from passing Laura Greene (1999-02) with 131, ranking seventh after she notched two on Sunday.
Taylor Eisert and Behrendt have recorded double-digits assists for four straight matches.
Shaffmaster has notched double digit kills in five of the last seven matches
The Tar Heels return home against No. 19 Florida State on Friday, Oct. 25, at 7:00 p.m. EST.
