October 25, 2024 | Volleyball
CHAPEL HILL, N.C. – North Carolina volleyball (16-2, 8-1 ACC) rallied against No. 19 Florida State (15-5, 5-4 ACC), eventually winning in five tense sets (19-25, 25-22, 22-25, 34-32,15-9) on Friday.
After dropping the first set, Carolina bounced back with a much improved second set, opening with two separate runs of three straight points. Safi Hampton helped seal the set with a 4-1 run, driving the Tar Heels to a 25-22 win.
But they dropped the next set. In a must win fourth set, Carolina fell behind quickly, but took the lead back after a 4-0 run. As the set progressed, the tension grew as both ranked teams responded to every kill. The score was tied at 20 different times and the set featured 11 lead changes, but Carolina won 34-32, forcing a winner-take-all set.
Carolina exploded in the final set, jumping out to a 9-3 lead and never looking back. Mabrey Shaffmaster passed Dani Nyenhuis and now has the 10th-most kills all time with 1,377. Carolina remains undefeated in matches that go to a fifth set.
