Seniors Lead The Way In 7-0 Sweep Of Yellow Jackets
April 10, 2022 | Women's Tennis
CARRBORO, N.C. - No.1 North Carolina women's tennis wrapped up its home portion of the 2022 spring season with a 7-0 win over No. 31 Georgia Tech on Sunday from Chapel Hill Tennis Club.
Before the match, the Tar Heels honored seniors Cameron Morra and Alle Sanford. This is Sanford's fifth year in Chapel Hill after taking advantage of the NCAA's COVID-19 eligibility extension. Sanford is the only player in NCAA women's tennis history to win four ITA Championships, while Morra won three and has been named an ITA All-American four times in her four season with the program.
The senior duo celebrated by clinching the doubles point for the Tar Heels upsetting the Yellow Jackets No. 27 ranked pair of Ava Hrastar and Kylie Bilchev, winning 6-3 on court two.
Before that, No. 1 Fiona Crawley and Elizabeth Scotty started the day by making quick work of No. 6 Carol Lee and Kate Sharabura, winning 6-0 on court one.
In singles, No. 18 Elizabeth Scotty, No. 37 Fiona Crawley, and junior Anika Yarlagadda got the Tar Heels rolling in singles, winning their first sets, 6-0. They would all go on to win in straight sets and clinch the match for North Carolina.
No. 8 Cameron Morra, No. 24 Reily Tran, and No. 44 Carson Tanguilig would also win their first set, but each dropped their second set to the Yellow Jackets. All three would go on to win third set super breakers to secure the perfect "Senior Sunday" sweep for the Tar Heels.
The Tar Heels improved to 23-0 on the season and 12-0 in the conference clinching the ACC regular-season title and the number one seed in the ACC tournament. The Yellow Jackets fall to 12-8 overall and 7-4 in league play.
Next, the Tar Heels will travel up US 15/501 to face off against No. 10 Duke Blue Devils this Friday at 6 pm.
