McArthur, 4x400 Crowned ACC Champions
February 29, 2020 | Track & Field
SOUTH BEND, Ind. - Daniel McArthur defended his ACC indoor shot put title, the men's 4x400 relay set an ACC Championship meet record and five other Tar Heels picked up All-ACC honors on Saturday as the University of North Carolina wrapped up the 2020 ACC Indoor Championships in the Loftus Sports Center at the University of Notre Dame.
Â
McArthur, a senior from Mooresville, N.C., defended his 2019 ACC title in the men's indoor shot put to help the men's team put 10 points towards its team score. Heading into the meet as conference leader, McArthur jumped to the lead in the first round with a throw of 60-2 (18.34m). He secured the win with his second attempt but eventually won the competition with a mark of 65-2 (19.86m). McArthur's second, fourth and sixth attempts would all have been good for first place in the competition – 64-10 (19.76m), 65-2 (19.86m) and 62-6 (19.06m) – as McArthur bested the second-place finisher by over four feet.
Â
North Carolina's men's 4x400-meter relay team redeemed itself in record fashion just one year after placing third in the event for second-team All-ACC honors. Brandon Cachon, Ryan Saint-Germain, Ari Cogdell and Isaiah Palmer ran 3:06.66 to set an ACC Indoor Championships meet record for the win. The victory continues a tradition of excellence in the 4x400 for North Carolina and the relay time currently ranks ninth in the nation. Awaiting the final results of the remaining conference championship meets around the country, the Tar Heels' ninth-place ranking would qualify the relay for the NCAA Indoor Championship meet on March 13-14 in Albuquerque, New Mexico.
Â
Five other Carolina student-athletes brought home All-ACC honors – two first-team and three second-team. Isa Paschall, a fifth year from Harrisburg, Pa., returned to the conference stage after redshirting the 2019 seasons and took third in the men's triple jump with a personal-best mark of 51-8.25 (15.75m) on his final jump. Isaiah Palmer, a junior from Plano, Texas, placed third with an indoor personal-best 400 time of 46.58 before anchoring North Carolina's historic 4x400 performance.
Â
Anna Keefer, Brianna Isles and Qhiyal Towns each took second-team All-ACC honors. Keefer, a junior from St. Michael Albertville, Minn., earned her second conference accolade of the weekend in the women's 60-meter dash with a fifth-place time of 7.41 seconds. Isles, a senior from Lawrenceville, Ga., twice set a new personal best in the women's triple jump, opening with a mark of 40-9.5 (12.43m) and jumping 40-9.75 (12.44m) on her final attempt to finish fifth. Towns, a sophomore from Newport News, Va., followed up a school-record performance in the 60-meter prelims by placing sixth with a time of 6.75 seconds in his first collegiate indoor season.
In the team scores, Carolina's men's program jumped seven spots from its 2019 performance. With two titles, six All-ACC performances and nine point scorers, the men's team totaled 47 points for fifth place, its best ACC Indoor Championship showing since 2015. Carolina's women's program was represented by just 14 student-athletes, but the small contingent fought to put up 24 points for 12th place.
Â
Over the course of the championship meet, the Tar Heels finished the weekend with two ACC titles, 10 All-ACC performances, four changes to the school record book and 14 new personal records.
