UNC Welcomes Back Alumni, Honors Life of Wynn Burrus This Weekend
February 27, 2020 | Women's Tennis
CHAPEL HILL - The No. 1 ranked North Carolina women's tennis team is back home this weekend to host a pair of ACC matches at Cone-Kenfield Tennis Center. The Tar Heels face No. 13 Virginia on Friday at 3 p.m. and Virginia Tech on Sunday at 11 a.m.
On Friday, the Tar Heels will host Alumni Day when the Cavaliers, led by former Carolina standouts - head coach Sara (Anundsen) O'Leary and assistant coach Gina Suarez-Malaguti - come to Chapel Hill for a top-20 showdown.Â
Virginia (8-3, 2-1 ACC) opened league play last weekend with mixed results, winning at home, 6-1, over Clemson and falling 4-3 at then No. 11 Georgia Tech in Atlanta.Â
The Cavaliers have a quartet of ranked singles players - No. 15 Natasha Subhash, No. 35 Rosie Johanson, No. 89 Amber O'Dell and No. 95 Sofia Munera. In doubles, Chloe Gullickson and O'Dell are ranked No. 41.Â
On Sunday, Carolina will honor the life of Wynn Burrus, a 21-year-old senior at UNC, who left this world much too soon when she unexpectedly passed away this past September. A Morehead-Cain scholar and member of the Kappa Delta Sorority, Burrus held multiple roles within UNC Student Government and was set to graduate this May from the prestigious Kenan Flagler Business School with a degree in business administration.
Burrus was an avid junior tennis player and was captain of the Broughton High School tennis team in Raleigh. For this, her senior year she created a UNC Bucket List and on that list was a desire to attend a Carolina tennis match.
The Tar Heels held their place as the No. 1 ranked team in the nation for a third-straight week after a pair of wins last weekend in Florida. Now 14-0, Carolina slipped past No. 2 Florida State, 4-3, and then it a was a more typical 6-1 score line against Miami.Â
Carolina continues to lead the country with seven ranked singles players. Cameron Morra (4), Alexa Graham (5), Sara Daavettila (6), Alle Sanford (39), Makenna Jones (43), Kacie Harvey (81) and Elizabeth Scotty (111). Meanwhile, the doubles teams feature Daavettila/Graham (4), Jones/Morra (5) and Jones/Sanford (19).
Next weekend, UNC hosts No. 10 Georgia Tech on Friday at 3 p.m. and visits No. 12 Wake Forest on Sunday at noon.Â
