Carolina Falls To Stanford In NCAA Semifinals
May 18, 2019 | Women's Tennis
ORLANDO - Stanford once again proved to be too much for North Carolina in the NCAA Women's Tennis Team Championship. This time it came in the Final Four as the No. 3 seeded Cardinal prevailed by a 4-2 margin from the USTA National Campus.
North Carolina finishes 2019 with a 33-2 record, the best in program history. The Tar Heels won their fourth-straight ACC Championship and advanced to the finals of the ITA National Indoor Team Championship back in February.
Stanford (27-1) jumped out to a 3-0 lead and it appeared would cruise into the finals, but grit and determination by the Tar Heels pushed the match well past three hours in length.
No. 46 Cameron Morra put UNC on the board with an impressive straight set, 6-3, 6-4, victory over No. 44 Emily Arbuthnott.
No. 20 Sara Daavettila followed suit with another victory to cut the deficit to 3-2. A day removed from winning the clinching point over UCLA in the quarterfinals, Daavetilla pinned the first loss since January on No. 66 Caroline Lampl, 1-6, 7-5, 6-2, snapping a 23-match winning streak for the Stanford senior.
Play continued into third sets on courts one and five that would decide who would advance to the national title. Both courts ended up in favor of the Cardinal as they knocked off the Tar Heels for the third-successive season in the postseason.
Carolina lost the doubles point for the second-straight day after having won 34 in a row dating back to the 2018 campaign. UNC's No. 12 team of Makenna Jones and Morra posted a solid 6-4 win over No. 29 Arbuthnott and Michaela Gordon, but it was the Cardinal that took the 1-0 lead with wins on courts one and three.
The NCAA Singles and Doubles Championship gets underway Monday. Jones, Graham, Daavettila and Morra are all competing in singles, while Aney and Graham, and Morra and Jones are included in the doubles field.
No. 2 seed North Carolina was making its third appearance in the Final Four, joining the 2010 and 2014 squads.
