Morra Falls In NCAA Singles Semifinals
May 24, 2019 | Women's Tennis
ORLANDO - It took the top-ranked player in the nation to knock North Carolina freshman Camera Morra out of the NCAA Singles Championship. No. 1 Estela Perez-Somarriba of Miami won in straight sets, 6-3, 6-1, in a semifinal match Friday evening from the USTA National Campus.
Morra became the first freshman in Tar Heel women's tennis history to reach the semifinals of the NCAA Singles Championship on Thursday. She couldn't duplicate her success over the last week in Lake Nona against Perez-Somarriba, the two-time reigning Atlantic Coast Conference Player of the Year.
Morra became just the fourth Carolina women's tennis player to reach the semifinals, joining Cinda Gurney (1993), Jamie Loeb (2015) and Hayley Carter (2016). Loeb remains the lone Tar Heel to win a singles national title.
UNC concludes another epic season in what has become rather routine in recent years for this program. Carolina set a program record with a 33-2 overall mark in dual matches, won a fourth-straight ACC Championship, once again went unbeaten in the conference regular season and reached the finals of the ITA Indoor National Team Championship for the fifth year in a row.
The Tar Heels boast five All-America players on their roster for the second-successive season. Jessie Aney grabbed her third career honor in doubles, Sara Daavetilla earned the nod in singles thanks to an impressive run to the NCAA Singles quarterfinals, Alexa Graham and Makenna Jones were both national seeds in singles and doubles, while Morra landed on both teams by reaching the singles semis and having a national seed designation in doubles.
