Carolina Set For ACC Cross Country Championships

BLACKSBURG, Va. – The University of North Carolina cross country teams kick off their postseason stretch with the 2019 ACC Cross Country Championships hosted by Virginia Tech on Friday.
The men's 8K will begin at 10 a.m. with the women's 6K scheduled for 11 a.m. at the Buford Meredith Cross Country Course in Blacksburg, Va.

North Carolina Men — Jeremy Brown, Jesse Hunt, Alex Milligan, Ian Moini, Luke Peterson, Mitch Resor, John Tatter, Matt Thornton, Brandon Tubby, Marshall Williamson
North Carolina Women — Mady Clahane, Erin Edmundson, Emmeline Fisher, Lizzy Harding, Naomi Harding, Paige Hofstad, Morgan Ilse, Lindsey Lanier, Alex Morris, Camryn Petit
Ranked teams include NC State (#6), Florida State (#10), Notre Dame (#17), Virginia Tech (#22) and Boston College (#26) on the women's side with Georgia Tech and Syracuse also receiving votes. The men's conference competition will feature six top-30 programs — Notre Dame (#20), Florida State (#21), NC State (#23), Virginia (#23), Virginia Tech (#26) and Syracuse (#28).

ACC CHAMPIONSHIP NOTES
• Carolina has won the ACC Men's Championship nine times, the third-most titles in the league. The men last captured the title in 1985.
• Fourteen Tar Heels on the men's side have captured the ACC Individual title - the most in the league and most recently in 1997 when John Cline win in 25:06.6.
• Carolina has won the ACC Women's Championship four times, the third-most titles in the conference. The women most recently captured the title in 2014.
• Eight Tar Heels on the women's side have won the individual title - second-most in the ACC, and most recently in 2011 when Kendra Schaaf won in 19:45.3.
• In 2018, the North Carolina men finished ninth in team standings and the women placed 12th. Enyaeva Michelin, who is redshirting the 2019 season, captured All-ACC honors with a 12th-place individual finish in the women's competition.
• Two transfer student-athletes, senior Paige Hofstad and sophomore John Tatter, are expected to make their ACC Championship debuts after earning all-conference and all-region accolades at their previous universities — Georgetown and Michigan, respectively.
• Morgan Ilse is expected to return to the ACC stage following a redshirt season in 2018. Ilse previously earned All-ACC and All-Region honors in 2017.

The University of North Carolina cross country teams competed against a deep field at the Under Armour Pre-National Invitational on Friday. Led by senior Paige Hofstad and redshirt junior Mitch Resor, the women's team finished 16th with 502 points and the men 17th with 500 points.
The Tar Heels took on some of the best competition in the country in the Friday's Blue events. The women competed against 10 of the top 30 teams in the nation while the men's team competed against nine ranked groups, including three of the top-five nationally ranked programs as voted on by the USTFCCCA National Coaches Poll.
Hofstad led Carolina for the third time this season, clocking 20:35.00 to place 19th in the women's 6K race. Graduate student Morgan Ilse ran 21:21.60 to finish 87th followed by redshirt junior Mady Clahane and senior Erin Edumundson in 110th and 130th, clocking times of 21:32.9 and 21:45.00, respectively. Freshman Lizzy Harding rounded out the Tar Heels' team score after crossing the finish line in 22:00.70 for 161st place.
In the men's Blue Division, Resor finished 56th with an eight-kilometer time of 24:29.50. Seniors Jeremy Brown and Brandon Tubby were the second and third Tar Heels across, taking 95th and 107th with respective times of 24:49.50 and 24:54.80. Redshirt junior Alex Milligan followed closely in 111th with a time of 24:56.30 and junior Jesse Hunt closed out the scoring, running 25:06.70 for 133rd.
• JOE PIANE NOTRE DAME INVITATIONAL RECAP / Oct. 4, 2019 •
The University of North Carolina cross country teams competed against a strong field at Notre Dame's Joe Piane Invitational on Friday. Led by seniors Paige Hofstad and Jeremy Brown, the women's team finished 20th with 492 points and the men 21st with 524 points.
Carolina took on some of the best competition in the country in the Friday's Blue Division events. The women were tested against 10 of the top 30 teams in the nation, including five top-10 programs. The men's team competed against 21 teams, including 12 nationally ranked programs as voted on by the USTFCCCA National Coaches Poll.
Hofstad led the Heels for the second time this season, clocking 17:09.00 to place 55th in the women's 5K race. Senior Erin Edmundson ran 17:35.21 to finish 97th while freshmen Lizzy Harding and Alex Morris clocked times of 17:38.39 and 17:43.89, respectively, for 106th and 113th place. Graduate student Morgan Ilse rounded out the Tar Heels' team score after crossing the finish line in 17:51.84 for 126th place.
In the men's Blue Division, Brown finished 66th with a five-mile time of 24:21.51. Senior Brandon Tubby and redshirt-junior Alex Milligan crossed the line within one second of each other, taking 111th and 112th with respective times of 24:52.32 and 24:53.03. Senior Matt Thornton finished 122nd with a time of 25:00.87 and redshirt-junior Luke Peterson ran 25:19.94 for 135th.
• CAVALIER CLASSIC RECAP / Sept. 14, 2019 •
The University of North Carolina cross country teams continued their seasons Saturday at the Cavalier Classic at Panorama Farms. Led by strong showings from Morgan Ilse and Paige Hofstad, the Tar Heel women took second place with 42 points, while the men finished third with 64 points in the five-team meet.
In the five-kilometer women's race, Ilse (17:03.3) and Hofstad (17:09.9) paced the Tar Heels with top-three finishes. Ilse's runner-up performance was just 1.6 seconds behind Tennessee's Katie Thronson, with Hofstad following close behind in third. The pair was joined in the top 10 by senior Erin Edmundson, whose time of 17:42.2 was good for eighth place. Freshmen Lizzy Harding (18:01.0) and Alex Morris (18:06.4) both placed in the top 15 to finish out the scoring for the Tar Heels.
The Carolina women finished with 42 points, finishing second to Tennessee's 36-point effort. Of the nine Carolina competitors, three women finished the race with new cross country 5K personal records.
On the men's side, senior Jeremy Brown (23:31.5), senior Matt Thornton (24:40.0) and redshirt junior Mitch Resor (24:45.9) all finished in the top 15 to lead Carolina. Sophomore John Tatter and redshirt junior Alex Milligan, whose times of 25:03.0 and 25:13.5 were good for 19th and 22nd place respectively, rounded out the scorers for UNC. Of the 11 Tar Heel men competing Saturday, three came away from the meet with new personal records over the 8K distance.
• ELON OPENER RECAP / Aug. 30, 2019 •
The North Carolina cross country programs kicked off the 2019 season Friday night with the Elon Opener at Elon University. The women's team finished second of 10 teams with 59 points in the 4K while the men placed third of 12 teams with 71 points in their 6K race.
"The big value coming out of tonight is having a lot more clarity on where we are and what we've got to work on," director of track & field and cross country Chris Miltenberg said. "Certainly we're excited now to go to work for a while and figure those things out going forward."
The women's race featured four laps around a one-kilometer loop while the men ran six. The Tar Heels were led by a trio of upperclassmen — senior Paige Hofstad (14:41.0), senior Erin Edmundson (14:41.2) and graduate student Morgan Ilse (14:41.2) all finished in the top 10 with times separated by only 0.2 seconds. Carolina's scoring squad was rounded out by junior Lindsey Lanier and senior Ashley Smith, who finished 18th and 19th with personal-best performances of 15:03.1 and 15:03.2. Although they did not contribute to the team score, sophomore Camryn Petit and junior Emmeline Fisher crossed the finish line closely behind in 20th (15:03.6) and 22nd (15:05.3).
On the men's side, senior Matt Thornton and sophomore John Tatter led the way and each clocked 18:55.4 for 17th and 18th in the 6K. Senior Jeremy Brown, redshirt junior Alex Milligan and junior Jesse Hunt each posted points for the Tar Heels with top-25 times, placing 22nd (19:06.0), 23rd (19:07.0) and 25th (19:12.2) respectively.
