Tar Heels Emerge With Golden Goal Win Over FAU
August 28, 2016 | Women's Soccer
With the game tied at 1-1 and 2:01 to play in regulation time, the match was delayed by weather for approximately 40 minutes. UNC's Bridgette Andrzejewski scored her second goal of the game less than a minute after play resumed only to see FAU tie the match 33 seconds later and force overtime. Neither team scored in the first 10-minute overtime period but less than three minutes into the second extra session Redei notched the game-winner and her second goal of the season to lift the Heels to 3-0 on the campaign. Both Alex Kimball and Annie Kingman assisted on the game-winning goal.
Florida Atlantic, which fell to 2-2 on the season, had twice answered Tar Heel goals by Andrzejewski in quick order. The Tar Heel freshman from Lutherville, Md., opened the scoring in the game in the 17th minutes, scoring her first career goal on a set piece. After a foul on FAU, sophomore Ru Mucherera served a ball from the right side of the pitch into the left side of the penalty area and Andrzejewski was there for the putaway. Carolina's lead held until the 27th minute when the Owls tied the game on a goal by Asta Arnadottir. She scored from the right side of the box in a one-v-one situation with Tar Heel goalkeeper Lindsey Harris after a ball was lofted over the Tar Heel back line by FAU's Pernille Velta.
Neither team scored again until the match went into the late stages of regulation. In the 80th minute, Redei had a great chance to give the Heels the lead but her shot hit the cross bar. Mother Nature intervened and with 2:01 to play the match went into a weather delay. After play resumed, the Tar Heels took the lead for the second time in the match when Andrzejewski tallied just 51 seconds later, beating the keeper to the left side of the goal. But FAU answered almost immediately and tied the game just 33 seconds after Andrzejewsk's goal in the 90th minute of play. Sammy Rowland scored the goal off an assist by Elisha Holmes, receiving a pass near the edge of the penalty area and sending the ball over Harris into the far side netting.
That set up the Tar Heel heroics in the second overtime period with Redei notching the winning goal off the assists by Kimball and Kingman. Statistically, the Tar Heels finished with 19 shots as compared to seven for FAU.
Carolina returns to action next Friday when it plays at second-ranked Duke Friday evening at 7:30 p.m. at Koskinen Stadium in Durham, N.C. The game is a non-conference game for both teams and will be played as part of the Duke Nike Classic. The game will be nationally televised on ACC Network Extra.
