Tar Heels & Blue Devils Fight To Scoreless Draw
September 3, 2016 | Women's Soccer
The game was a non-conference contest between the two local rivals and was played as part of the Duke Nike Classic. The two teams are not scheduled to play in the regular season this year as part of the ACC schedule as each of the conference's 14 teams plays only 10 league games.
Duke outshot the Tar Heels in the game 30-6 but had to settle for the scoreless tie against the Tar Heels, who are now 14-0-1 all-time in games played at Koskinen Stadium against the Blue Devils. UNC is now 3-0-1 on the 2016 season heading into a match against Villanova (1-3) on noon on Sunday at Koskinen Stadium. The Blue Devils are now 3-1-1 on the campaign.
The Blue Devils outshot the Tar Heels 13-0 in the first half of the game and had at least a half dozen tremendous chances to put a goal in the back of the net. But Harris made three saves in the first half while two Blue Devil shots hit the cross bar and another hit the right goal post.
Despite being outshot 8-3 in the second half, the Tar Heels had some looks at goal for the first time in the game. Harris was forced to make only two saves in the second half for the Heels and Tar Heel freshman Zoe Redei almost won the game for UNC in the 86th minute only to see her chance denied by the cross bar.
The Blue Devils were dangerous again in the first 10-minute overtime period but Harris came up with saves on six of the Duke shots in the period. Both teams took three shots in the second overtime period with both goalkeepers having to come up with one save.
Harris' previous career high for saves in a game came on October 23, 2014 when she had six against Florida State in a 1-1 tie with the Seminoles. UNC used a goalkeeper rotation that year with Bryane Heaberlin playing the first half and Harris playing the second half and overtime so her six saves came in 65 minutes of action. The 11 saves by Harris are the most by a Tar Heel goalkeeper since Molly Current made 14 saves against the Virginia Select Club Team on October 24, 1980. That game came in Carolina's second varsity season.
The 30 shots by Duke were the most taken by a Tar Heel opponent since Texas A&M took 20 shots in a 4-3 win over Carolina in an overtime game on September 11, 2011 at Koskinen Stadium in that year's Duke Nike Classic.
Friday's game was played in tropical storm conditions with winds up to 20 miles per hour from the Northeast and steady and sometimes torrential rain through the course of the evening.
