Carolina Clinches Coastal Division On Senior Night
October 23, 2016 | Men's Soccer
North Carolina (11-2-2, 5-1-1) pulls ahead by six points over second-place Notre Dame in the Coastal Division. The Tar Heels are tied with Atlantic Division leader Wake Forest with 16 total points in the race for the top seed in the upcoming ACC Championship.
David October put his Tar Heel club ahead 1-0 on a penalty kick in the 18th minute.
North Carolina (11-2-2, 5-1-1) was awarded a free kick 40 yards out to start the scoring play. Cam Lindley's cross wound up at the foot of Tucker Hume, and as he turned toward goal he was upended by a Hokie defender and the penalty kick was awarded to the Tar Heels.
October promptly converted his second penalty of the season.
The Tar Heels nearly doubled their lead in the final seconds of the first half. Alan Winn delivered a ball to Nils Bruening, who smartly stayed onsides but the point-blank shot was saved by the face of keeper Ben Lundgaard to keep it a 1-0 Carolina advantage at intermission.
James Pyle made the biggest save of the night in the final 10 minutes of regulation. It came on a shot from the Hokies' leading-scorer Marcelo Acuna in the 81st minute.
Pyle's three saves gave him his ACC-leading 10th clean sheet of the season.
Carolina doubled its lead in the 87th minute to secure the win. Bruening beat his defender down the byline and left a pass to Tucker Hume for his fifth goal of the season.
North Carolina honored its seniors - Tucker Hume, Walker Hume, Warren Marshall, Nico Melo, Eric O'Brien, Colton Storm and Nick Williams - before the match on the final home game of the regular season.
UNC visits Notre Dame on Friday at 7 p.m.
