
Howard, Summers Earn Academic All-District

CHAPEL HILL, N.C. - Two North Carolina student-athletes have been named to Capital One Division I Academic All-District track and field/cross country teams, announced Thursday by CoSIDA (College Sports Information Directors of America). Sarah Howard was named to the District 3 women's team and Houston Summers was named to the District 3 men's team. The Tar Heels, both sophomores, were recognized for their athletic and academic achievement.
As members of an All-District team, they are now eligible for Academic All-America honors, which will be announced early in June. Candidates must have a cumulative GPA of 3.3 to be nominated. District 3 includes schools in North Carolina, Virginia and Tennessee.
Howard, from Dublin, Ga., placed second at the 2014 ACC Indoor Championships and fifth at the Outdoor Championships in shot put. She ranks second in school history in both indoor and outdoor shot and has earned All-ACC Academic honors. She has not yet declared a major.
Summers, from Greensboro, N.C., was second in javelin at the ACC Outdoor Championships to earn All-ACC honors. He also has earned All-ACC Academic honors and is majoring in psychology with majors in medical anthropology and chemistry.
Both Howard and Summers will compete at the NCAA East Preliminary Round in Jacksonville, Fla., this week.
