Tar Heels Score Five In Second Half To Top ODU
November 2, 2014 | Field Hockey
UNC trailed 1-0 at halftime, with the host Monarchs' only goal coming on a penalty stroke in the 30th minute. Carolina didn't score until the 44th minute, when junior Emma Bozek deflected in a shot by senior Samantha Travers on a penalty corner to tie the game at 1-1. Bozek scored the gamewinner just under four minutes later, on a hard shot from the left side of the circle into the lower right corner of the cage.
Bozek assisted on the next one, grabbing a rebound and sending it to the front of the cage, where junior Casey Di Nardo put it in for a 3-1 lead in the 51st minute.
In the 62nd minute, senior Loren Shealy sent a pass across the cage from the right side and redshirt freshman Sam Night put it in from the far post to go up 4-1.
Less than two minutes later, the Tar Heels got their final goal of the afternoon from Di Nardo, for whom the game was a homecoming. The forward from Virginia Beach took a pass from junior Nina Notman in front of the cage and scored for a 5-1 lead.
"After halftime, we played more aggressively," UNC coach Karen Shelton said. "We weren't playing poorly in the first half, we were just playing comfortably. You're not going to win many games playing comfortably.
"In the second half we knew we had to pay with more authority and I credit the team with making that adjustment."
UNC scored on five of its six second-half shots and finished with nine shots overall. ODU had four shots, just one of them in the second half. The Tar Heels had two penalty corners, both in the second half, while ODU had none in the game.
Next up for the Tar Heels is the Atlantic Coast Conference Tournament, set for Nov. 6, 7 and 9 in Durham. UNC is the No. 2 seed in the field and will open play Thursday at 1:30 p.m. against host Duke, the No. 7 seed.
"I'm very pleased with this group," Shelton said. "They're hardworking and focused. And I'm very happy with the regular season - we've played very well at times and still have room to grow and improve. Now we've wrapped up the first part of our season and we're excited to head on to the second part, the ACC Tournament."
