CHAPEL HILL, N.C. - North Carolina swept Miami (Ohio) 3-0 (25-15, 25-13, 25-22) to cap the morning session of 2011 Tar Heel Classic at Carmichael Arena. Chaniel Nelson registered a career-high 16 kills and senior setter Erica Behm tallied 35 assists to pace the offense.
The Tar Heels utilized consecutive kills from Gaffen and Chaniel Nelson to climb to an early 6-1 lead in set one, forcing Miami to call timeout. The Red Hawks won six of the next eight points to trim the Carolina lead to 8-7. UNC pulled away again midway through the frame, 17-13, on back-to-back kills from Berringer, forcing Miami to use another timeout. The Tar Heels closed out the opening stanza, 25-15, on an 8-2 string capped by an unassisted kill by senior Shelbey Bleke. Nelson tallied seven kills on 11 swings for a .636 hitting efficiency and Behm added 12 assists to pace the Carolina offense.
It was more of the same for UNC in the second set, jumping out to an early 4-0 lead highlighted by two service aces from sophomore Kaitlyn Anderson. The Red and White battled back to pare the UNC advantage to 8-7 off a block by Jenn Caylor. The Tar Heels took nine of the next 10 points, though, to stretch the lead to 16-7, forcing Miami to burn another timeout. UNC took the second set by a score of 25-13, capturing set point off an attack error by the Red Hawks' Madison Dodd. Nelson continued to dominate, unleashing five kills with a .444 attack percentage.
Miami found its rhythm in the third set, going up 10-8 on a kill by Lisa Treadway, equaling its largest lead of the match. The Tar Heels took five of the next six points, though, to go ahead of the Red Hawks 13-11. Junior outside hitter Heather Henry unleashed a kill off an assist from Kaylie Gibson to extend the UNC advantage to 17-15. The Red and White fought back to even the score at 20-all on a Jenn Caylor kill, assisted by Meg Riley. UNC captured the set (25-22) and match on another kill from Henry, assisted by Behm.
The Tar Heels return to action at 7:30 p.m. to face the University of St. Louis at Carmichael Arena. Admission to the match is free.
