BLACKSBURG, Va.- Senior Patience Coleman claimed her first ACC Indoor title in the women's high jump to lead the Tar Heels on Day 2 of the ACC Indoor Track and Field Championships. Seven other athletes and two relays scored points for UNC, and eight Tar Heels will be competing in finals Saturday on the third and final day of competition at Virginia Tech's Rector Field House.
Coleman, the 2010 ACC Indoor runner-up and a two-time ACC Outdoor champion, cleared 5-11 1/2 to win her first Indoor title for Carolina. That height should easily move Coleman into the top ten in the NCAA. Senior Mateo Sossah, the reigning ACC Indoor champion and NCAA runner up, improved his season-best score in the men's heptathlon to claim third place with 5,674 points. That score should also move Sossah up considerably in the NCAA rankings.
"As usual we had our highs and lows," head coach Dennis Craddock said of the Tar Heels' performance so far. "We have a lot of athletes competing in finals tomorrow, which is really important for us, and a lot of our underclassmen really stepped up for us so far. Patience's win was a big highlight, and Ariel has had a super weekend so far. Zoey had the best race of her career today, and Jake in the 5,000- it was great to have a freshman in the top-five. Our team goals are still the same going into tomorrow- we still want to finish in the top three."
Sophomore Ariel Roberts, who finished second in the pentathlon Thursday, took third in the women's high jump with a personal-best height of 5-8 3/4. Freshman Merritt Van Meter also claimed a third-place for UNC in the women's pole vault, clearing 13-3 1/2, and freshman Sandi Morris took fourth with the same height.
Juniors Kendra Schaaf, Elizabeth Mott, Tasha Stanley and Ashley Verplank combined to take eighth in the women's DMR with a time of 12:00.14, and the men's team of freshman Patrick Schellberg, juniors Jeremy Gerlach and Alex Cremar, and sophomore Logan Rosenberg also placed eighth in 10:05.05.
Freshman Jacob Hurysz placed fifth in the men's 5,000 with a time of 14:17.03, an in the men's high jump, sophomore Dylan Moore tied for seventh and freshman Phillip Morris finished ninth, each with a height of 6-8 3/4.
In other finals, sophomore Mariana Lucena finished 11th in the women's 5,000 in a personal-best time of 17:06.09. Junior Jacinda Evans placed 11th in the long jump (18-6 1/2) and sophomore Chrishawn Williams was 14th (17-10 3/4). In the men's 5,000, senior Adam Cunningham finished ninth in 14:31.77, and freshman John Raneri and Alex Deir ran personal best times as Raneri finished 13th (14:37.66) and Deir took 16th (14:47.65).
In Friday's preliminary heats on the track, eight Carolina runners qualified for Saturday's finals in 11 different events. Freshman Isaac Presson, sophomore Clayton Parros and senior Charles Cox each qualified for tomorrow's finals in two events. Presson finished third in the men's one mile (4:07.24) and sixth in the 800 finals (1:51.42). Parros and Cox each finished in the preliminary top-eight in the 200 and 400 events. Parros will enter the 200-meter finals in fourth (21.29) and Cox is sixth (21.32), and in the 400, Cox finished second (47.55) and Parros third (47.63) in the first round.
In the women's prelims, junior Ashley Verplank finished second (4:46.55) in the mile, and senior LaToya James is in fourth in the 60-meter hurdles (8.35). In the 400, juniors Zoey Russell (fourth, 54.73) and Elizabeth Mott (seventh, 55.21) made it through to the finals, and junior Tasha Stanley, the 2010 ACC Indoor 800-meter runner up, will be competing in tomorrow's finals in that event after taking fourth in 2:08.99 today.

Saturday's field events begin at 11 a.m. with the women's shot put, and track events start with the women's one mile finals at noon. Live results will be available throughout the meet, and The ACC Network will feature live coverage on theACC.com on Saturday starting at 3 p.m.
