Atlanta, Ga. - North Carolina swept Georgia Tech 3-0 (28-26, 25-18, 27-25) from O'Keefe Gym to maintain its perfect ledger (4-0) in the Atlantic Coast Conference and improve to 12-3 overall. Junior outside hitter Emily McGee tallied 17 kills in the victory and senior libero Kaylie Gibsonpitched in 18 digs to lead the way. The win is Carolina's first at Georgia Tech since 2002.
The opening frame was back-and-forth in the early going before Georgia Tech began to pull away. With the score tied at 8-all, the Yellow Jackets went on an 8-4 run to take a four-point lead at 16-12, forcing the Tar Heels to call timeout. UNC countered with a 7-2 run out of the timeout to go ahead (19-18) on back-to-back kills by freshman middle blocker Cameron Van Noy. Carolina and Georgia Tech traded points the rest of the way, until the Tar Heels closed out set one in extra points (28-26) on a kill by Emily McGee and block from Cora Harmsand Van Noy. The first set featured 16 tie scores and 10 lead changes. McGee posted eight kills on a .545 attack percentage in the period.
UNC opened up a 10-6 lead in set two on a kill by McGee, assisted by Erica Behm, followed by a kill from Chaniel Nelson, forcing Georgia Tech to call timeout. The Ramblin' Wreck rallied to trim the deficit to one at 12-11, but Carolina won the next seven points en route to its largest lead of the match at 19-11. Nelson and Berringer tallied two kills apiece during the Tar Heel run. UNC closed out the second set (25-18) on a kill by Nelson to take a 2-0 lead over the Yellow Jackets.
Georgia Tech grabbed a three-point lead in the third stanza (6-3), but Carolina battled back to even the score at 8-8 on a McGee kill. The Yellow Jackets took nine of the next 14 points, though, to open up a four-point lead (17-13), their largest of the match. The Tar Heels called timeout and rallied to pare the Georgia Tech advantage to one (23-22) on an attack error by Monique Mead. Ece Tanersubbed into the match with UNC trailing 24-23 and unleashed a service ace to send the set to extra points. Carolina captured the third set (27-25) and the match on consecutive attack errors by Georgia Tech's Mead.
The Tar Heels return home as they host NC State at Carmichael Arena Oct. 4, at 7 p.m. It will be Carolina's first home match against an ACC opponent.
